Tor San Michele was built between 1559 and 1568 as defense facility close to the delta of Tiber river. The project of the tower was done by Michelangelo Buonarroti.  The tower was occupied by the Germans and later by the Americans during World War II.

Close to this tower (here), on 2 November 1975, italian intellectual Pier Paolo Pasolini was brutally killed.
